Context

After selecting the Polyglots (es_CR) team, I wanted to understand how WordPress translations are created and managed. Since this was my first experience contributing to an open-source localization project, I spent time exploring the platform before making any contributions.

My goal was to become familiar with the translation workflow and understand how volunteers collaborate to improve WordPress.

Procedure

During my first experience with Polyglots, I:

• Accessed the WordPress translation platform.
• Explored the available translation projects.
• Read the translation guidelines for Spanish (Costa Rica).
• Reviewed examples of existing translations.
• Learned how translation suggestions are submitted and reviewed.

Challenges

One of the biggest challenges was understanding that translations should not always be literal. I learned that it is important to use expressions that sound natural to users in Costa Rica while maintaining the original meaning.

I also had to become familiar with the translation interface and understand how the review process works before feeling comfortable contributing.

What I Learned

This experience helped me understand that localization is a collaborative effort focused on providing the best possible experience for users. I also learned that following translation guidelines and using consistent terminology is essential for producing high-quality translations.

Reflection

Although I am still at the beginning of my journey with the Polyglots team, I already feel that I have learned a lot. Exploring the platform gave me a better understanding of how open-source communities collaborate, and I am motivated to continue learning and making future contributions.
